Switchgrass
Tolerance to Several Pre and Post Applied Corn Herbicides.

Werner, 1998. Agronomy Abstr. (in press).
The objective of this project was
to evaluate several pre and post applied corn herbicides with
grass activity for switchgrass tolerance in the field and greenhouse.
In the field, switchgrass was sown in mid to late April and several
corn herbicides were applied prior to switchgrass emergence, or
post when the switchgrass had 2 to 3 visible leaves. Treatments
included some triazines, metolachlor, nicosulfuron, primisulfuron,
and imazethapyr to name a few. Switchgrass stand counts were taken
the year of establishment and above ground biomass was harvested
the year after establishment. In the greenhouse, many of the same
herbicides were evaluated. The preemergence treatments were applied
immediately after seeding and the postemergence treatments were
applied to 2 to 3 leaf stage switchgrass. Of the pre herbicides,
only the triazines provided adequate safety to seedling switchgrass.
None of the postemergence products with the exception of atrazine
were completely safe in both the field and greenhouse experiments.
The results of these experiments showed that none of the non triazine
products evaluated in these experiments have adequate safety for
use in seedling switchgrass.
